You Don’t Always Have To Have An Opinion

Your mood is based in vapid opinions about the circumstances you find yourself in.

Who told you that you had to have life go your way every single day? Who put that in your head?

You don’t get the promotion you wanted, you get sad. Someone says a few words to you, you feel “offended.”

You’re not obligated to let any of these things bother you at all. They don’t have to rob you of vital psychic energy.

“We have the power to hold no opinion about a thing and to not let it upset our state of mind — for things have no natural power to shape our judgments.”

Marcus Aurelius reminds us things within themselves have no power over our state of mind. The power lies within our judgements of those things, our opinions of them.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.

“But, Anthony, bad things DO happen. How can we not judge bad things as bad?”

This is the part of personal development that goes right over our heads. We tend to drag these little common sense concepts to the most ridiculous degree.

Plainly speaking, yes, bad things do indeed happen. But there are a million other arbitrary things that we let get under skin.

Things like a comment from a co-worker, someone cutting us off in traffic, the day of the week, the list goes on.

We don’t have to let these things bother us. It choose to be bothered by them.

Stoicism teaches us a practical lesson. That we have power, truly domain over the judgements we place on our circumstances.

Revoke your power from circumstances today by refusing to label them as negative.
