The self help field is a funny thing. There’s so many articles that give you tactics on how to be the best version of yourself, how to get rich and how to, how to, how to.
To be honest none of that matters. There is only one thing that matters and the self help community isn’t going to give it to you.
The 5 item “listicle” is nothing in comparison to this one thing. This one thing outweighs all of the listicle articles any of the most “qualified” self help, motivational speaker can offer you.
What’s interesting is that many of them won’t tell you this out right. They dress it up. They dance around it. Sometimes they avoid it all together.
I know why they do it too. It’s because you don’t want to hear it.
It’s a win-win for both sides because just as long as they keep dancing around it, you can sustain self delusion fueled by nonsense and they get to keep selling you superfluous information.
The One Thing
Obsession is that one thing that will lead you to the promise land. Not some hack or the latest tactic.
The best thing about obsession is that it doesn’t require you to be talented. Obsession allows for you to come as you are. If you love what you do, you will develop the necessary skill to achieve whatever it is you want.
Remember the old adage:
“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”
Or something like that.
I see many articles where people are crying that they are “not robots” or “they are not Gary Vee.”
What they don’t understand about people like Gary is that he is OBSESSED with what he does.
When I see these articles I know one thing for sure. That they don’t love what they do. They are not obsessed.
You see, when you’re obsessed, you can’t hear or see anyone else.
You end up on an island of your own. You’re building your empire. And you don’t need a listicle to do it.
The thing with obsession is that it will lead you to whatever resources you need in the moment. The 5 item listicle is simply a snap shot of the moment the author was in when a certain problem presented it self.
That article is a reflection of the paradigm they used to cut through that specific problem.
Obsession will guide you to wherever you need to go, however you need to get there. There is no predefined path laden with tactics, strategies and courses to show you how to get there.
The Casualties Of Obsession
I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you what comes with being obsessed with your craft.
There will be many late nights where you forego sleep. You will miss out on parties, family gatherings, your favorite TV shows, you name it.
But you won’t even mind because you are so indulged in what you are doing.
What you will miss is your social ties. Not the professional ones you made while pursuing your dream but the more intimate ones.
No one ever tells you that you have to practically give up everything for an extended period of time in order for you to accomplish your goals.
They tell you about the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but not the storms on the way there. The storms where your significant other is arguing with you telling you that you aren’t “making” enough time. Where your parents are saying that you haven’t seen them in a while.
Your best bet is to face it now. If you want something, understand that it’s not going to be free. It will come at a price.
When you slip into this flow state of obsession, the normal people around you will do everything in their power to knock you out of it.
These people don’t want you to succeed. They want you to stay right where they are.
They will constantly tell you that you are obsessed with what you’re doing as if that is a bad thing.
What’s the point in not being obsessed? You have big dreams. You have to be crazy to go after what you want.
You might as well keep it to yourself. Don’t tell people what you’re doing.
Put your head down, work your ass off and when they ask you about some sort of normie life, just nod in agreement. Yes them down. They will never understand what it’s like to be obsessed about something you love more than life, whatever that might be.
The Hard Times
What hard times? When you’re obsessed, your life will more than likely be burning down around you but you’re building a new one, a better one and by the time you look up you’re somewhere on a beautiful island enjoying the fruits of your labor.
As cheesy as that sounds, that’s how it goes.
The only thing that could have led to you being so obsessed is the fact that you were sick of the current life you were leading.
In order for you to build a new life, you had to take your attention away from the current life. This caused your life to come crashing down, burning all around you.
But one thing kept you going. Obsession.
Oh, also Tuna and oatmeal.
During lean times it’s super hard not to notice you aren’t getting paid. Your obsession with building a better life is what blinds your to the mishaps of everything “going wrong” around you.
I put “going wrong” in quotes because this is exactly what you want to happen.
You want to lose your job, you want your spouse to leave you, you want to throw everything from your old life into a dumpster and start fresh.
Hard times will come and go before you know it because you are obsessed.
Look, at this point you get what I’m trying to convey. Those of you who get it, “get it.”
Stop looking for permission to do what you know what you want and be obsessed. Make that decision.
