The Mindset Gap: Dichotomy Of Success

The mindset gap is an interesting concept to me. I have always been aware of the fact that mindset varies in individuals but I never really thought to articulate it as such because I always thought that raw talent is what made people successful. That is until I started to see the internet reach the scale that it is today. It seems as though hard work beats raw talent when raw talent refuses to work hard.

I learned over the last 5 years or so, that if you have a go-getter mindset, despite having little talent, you can achieve much more than those who have a lot of talent with a no-getter mindset. Yes, I’ll admit it, in my naiveté once upon a time I thought that all one needed was to be blessed by talent and success would fall into their laps.

The internet change all of that. It seems now that one can develop talent just so long as they apply relentless pressure consistently.

I’m writing this because it is becoming more apparent to me that there is a huge discrepancy building as we head deeper into the 21st century.

With technological advances, an abundance information and so on, it seems as if people are becoming less capable. Not because they are lacking in anything tangible. But there is a lacking in the will.

It seems to me that the human Will is weakening. I don’t want to rush to identify the mechanism responsible for causing this form of atrophy but I will say that technology and information are the culprits.

Inherent in many systems, there are imbalances that present themselves as “gaps” between groups in performance of some kind.

The wealth inequality gap and the gender pay gap are two examples of them.

But there is another type of discrepancy that we don’t talk much about. The “mindset gap.”

I first heard this term, mindset gap, used by a Medium writer name Ayodeji Awosika.

I thought it was a perfect explanation for the disproportionality between the go getters and no getters.

The mindset gap also seems to explains the wealth inequality gap in some cases as well.

We live in the era of the internet where we can create and run online businesses centered around our passions right from our smart phones.

Yet still, people who want to make it out of the 9-5 jive refuse to accept this and act on it.

Some even demonize it with all their might.

This kind of denial is just one of the characteristics of the mindset of negative people.

I also see this with people who want to improve their health via exercise. They come up with every excuse under the sun as to why they cannot start improving their health today.

What baffles me the most, which is the reason that underpins the purpose of me writing this, is the fact that when people who have a desire for a specific lifestyle figure out how to get what they want out of life, the people with a negative mindset finds some way to poo-poo all over it.

They say things like “well they had a rich uncle” or things like “someone gifted them $400,000 for their business.”

Whatever they can find to negate successful people’s efforts, they will.

They overlook the fact that mind set had a huge impact on the success these people have.

No one just takes $400,000 and turn it into a thriving empire.

When people say this foolishness, I ask them “if you were given $400,000 would you be able to do what they did with it?

The Dichotomy Of Mindset

There is a dichotomy of mindset, the mindset gap.

The mindset gap is different from the wealth inequality gap or the gender pay gap.

This isn’t a social situation that can be fixed with the signing of a piece of legislation. It starts and ends with the individual.

It’s as simple as this: you’re either a go getter or a no getter.

The No-Getter

The no-getter makes excuses at every single turn. They find problems for every solution. The no-getter also complains about “the system.” The system exists. Yes, but what are you going to do despite the system?

The no-getter carves out their “safe” little corner of life to sit in. It’s their comfort zone. They do what they are familiar with in this confined pace.

The no-getter ceases to grow mentally from that place of comfort. Therefore their world shrinks.

While the world advances, providing them more opportunity, ironically their “safe spaces” shrinks.

They find it hard to adapt physically because they refuse to adapt mentally.

They blame it on so called anxiety and depression. Claiming to have these disorders that should be reserved for people who actually have been diagnosed with them.

You see, the no-getter hasn’t even been diagnosed with any disorder at all. They cling to some self manufactured disorder in order to get out of doing the work.

The above forms just one half of the picture of the mindset gap.

It also looks like friends and family presenting the no getter with opportunities to get out of their 9-5 situation in order to spread their wings and fly.

Despite what I’ve said before about friends and family who are haters, they actually know where your gifts and talents lie. This is precisely why they hate in the first place.

Unlimited amount of developmental resources by way of feedback is readily available to the no getter who wants to know lwhat direction they should take their life.

A butterfly cannot see its own wings. The no-getter should be listening so that they can evolve and leave any situation they feel is not suitable for them.

The Go-Getter

The go getter is the one who makes the mindset gap apparent

On the other hand, the go getter is a hunter. This is the person who sees the silver lining in everything.

When met with a messed up situation, the go-getter sees it as an opportunity for growth. This person is skilled at rising from the ashes because they have no fear in their heart.

The go-getter is not effected by what others think of them.

As the world changes, the go-getter evolves. The go-getter sees change and instability as the catalyst for evolution into the best version of themselves.

This is, perhaps, where the chasm of mindset between the no-getter and go-getter becomes glaringly apparent.

The go-getter doesn’t let anything hold them back while the no-getter lets everything hold them back.

The go-getter is the type to get their asses kicked, get up and ask for another. They rise from any situation unscathed with new lessons gleaned.

The go-getter fails their way to success while the no-getter fails and retires to their little “safe space.”

I give the self help community a hard time. But I see content from some well meaning people in this space who get poo-poo’d on for providing good insight into how to achieve what you want out of life.

Ask yourself this, and be honest.

Which one are you? The no-getter or the go-getter?

If you can’t tell which one you are then you’re probably a no-getter. Also, if you’re in need of a little hint, pay attention to your mental chatter when you see someone living the kind of life you want to live.

It will reveal everything you need to know about yourself.

The Dichotomy Of Mental Attitude

In this life you’re either working or playing. The balance you strike dictates the amount of success you’ll have.

If you like to play when you should be working on a goal you have a so called burning desire then you won’t get anywhere.

I’ll also like to be fair and say this. The volume of work you put in is predicated on the magnitude of your goals, dreams or aspirations.

I hate to see people who have grand goals of becoming famous singers or pop stars or speakers or whatever but they’re on PS4 playing 2k for hours on end.

Where do they get the time to put in the work if they’re working for someone else, sleeping then playing video games. It just doesn’t add up.

Needless to say, you are either doing one or the other. You’re either working or playing.

You should be trying to work as much as your goal takes for it to achieve.

Of course save some time for play. It’s where your creativity is nurtured. But don’t screw around playing for hours on end. Then you have the audacity to wonder why you’re not getting the notoriety you want.

I’ve never been a “shades of gray” kind of person. It is either 1 or 0. On or off. Black or white.

I am either playing or working. There’s no in between.

This has had me labeled many things such as an “over analyzer, a go hard, etc.”

But I have never seen anyone who was lukewarm about anything make it big in life, no matter what it is.

I’m a true believer in doing something with all your heart or not doing it at all. 

Strive to be the best at what you do. Get better at it incrementally. 

Why else would you do it?

You know what people have called me when I’ve achieved a specific goal after working hard at it for months on end? Lucky!

Ha! Lucky? People don’t understand the amount of work that is required to achieve any kind of REAL goal, especially a goal that has you loving life on your terms.

Make A Decision

It was in “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill that I truly learned the power of being decisive.

People who procrastinate will never reach their promised land.

We all have one.

It is ours to inherit but we have to work for it. We have to make the decision to get into a hunter’s mentality.

Having a lukewarm attitude about success is one of the most time wasting things you can indulge in. There’s no point in going at it half-pregnant.

Adopting a dichotomous outlook on mental attitude serves to set you on the right path to success. 

You’ve heard the age old terms “work hard play, hard, go hard or go home, etc”

Success Is In The Extremities

Adopting the dichotomy of mental attitude is acknowledging the importance of going to the extreme in order to be successful. 

It’s in the extremities that your success lies. No one was ever remembered for being average. 

This is crucial. You are either working or playing.

When I’m working on this blog, my podcast or video series, I’m working. That’s it. It’s serious business.

At a party with friends and family? Playing.

When I’m reading up on new material for growth, I’m working.

Negative Ned & Winner Warrior

There are two archetypes that readily come to mind when I think of people we are no-getters and go-getters, Negative Ned and Winner Warrior. These are characters that embody the concepts I talk about on this blog.

The people who find fault in everything and the people who find opportunity in everything. These characters are the physical manifestation of the mindset gap.

Negative Ned

We all know negative Ned. Negative Ned is a drain to be around.

This guy likes to panic over every little thing.

When negative Ned walks into a room, no one pays attention to him. As a matter of fact, people are repulsed by Ned.

Imagine Ned at a networking seminar. He walks into the room and people instantly feel the air of gloom come over them.

When Negative Ned finally gets out of his shell, he attempts to introduce himself.

He botches these attempts because he opens with something like:

“The system has been out to get me since day one. I can’t seem to make any headway with my business.”

This is the type of character that you have to get the heck away from or they will infiltrate your aura.

I know plenty of these types. They complain and moan and find every negative in each situation they’re presented with.

Winner Warrior

Winner Warrior on the other hand has an air of leadership. It’s refreshing to be around winner Warrior because he believes in himself.

Winner Warrior puts his faith in God, a higher power. The silver lining in every circumstance is readily apparently to him.

Opportunities seem to flow to winner Warrior. He is ready to fill any role, business opportunity or even mentor if asked.

Winner Warrior embodies the mindset that the no-getter, negative Ned just can’t seem to grasp.

The two will go on to live drastically different lives.

While negative Ned plays it safe, stays in his corner, finds a problem for every solution, winner Warrior will move onto living the life God intended for him to live.

Winner Warrior will live on his on terms.

As we venture further into the 21st century we will see the mindset gap widen. It will become increasingly clear who the go getters are and who the no getters are. There won’t be any blurred lines.

When automation becomes more prevalent, the value of the human element will go up. Those who can foster creativity and insight will be the winners. This can only come from those who are willing to engage transformative introspection, something that only a few of us are capable of through the appropriate mindset.
