How to build and maintain momentum at will.
You know the high energy achiever when you see him. Eyes straight ahead, shoulders back, standing tall. He speaks with purpose and conviction. He’s beaming from head to toe. He’s the kind of person that makes you feel like an utter loser while standing in close proximity. After being in the same room as this guy, all you want to do is crawl back home to get your life together.
You think to yourself: “How can someone be so lucky?”
Is it genetics? Was he born that way? Did he have a mentor? What is it?
It for sure isn’t luck. That, my friend, is the raw refusal to be anything but normal. That’s the presence of someone who is always switched on. I know what you’re thinking, it’s not “normal” to always be switched on.
My question to you is: what is “normal” now a days? Why would you ever want to be “normal?” Look around you. “Normal” has fallen apart. You’ve been “normal” all your life and what do you have to show for it?
You might think you don’t have it in you. But you do. You just don’t know how to elicit this type of energy within yourself yet. You see, this energy exists within all of us. You just have to learn how to tap into it. I’ll show you how I’m able to work 14–16 hour days without burning out.
Before we continue, forget everything you’ve heard and read about burnout. Forget everything people have told you about mental fatigue, “needing a break” and so called “balance.”
I’ll tell you the secret to putting in the volume of work you need to succeed: you have to LOVE what you’re doing. You have to have a burning desire to achieve a specific goal in life. When you do what you love, all of that burnout nonsense means nothing.
99% of people don’t do what they love. This is why burnout is so common. The majority of people work to build other people’s dreams and not their own. No wonder they’re burnt out.
I’m the type of person to do ONLY what he loves. If you ask me to do anything I don’t love, I’ll laugh you right out of the room. If I HAD to do anything but what I love, I’d burn out after an hour.
Many of my friends and family just don’t get it. They don’t know how I maintain the pace that I do. It’s simply because I love what I do and I do what I love. All I ever did was make the CHOICE to be high energy by doing a few basic things.
You want to know what the problem is with most “productivity” advice? It’s too cerebral. It doesn’t reach into the depths of your primal instincts and tap into the human spirit. Typical productivity advice is too “heady.” If you want to increase energy, focus, and especially creativity, you have to be out of your mind.
Enthusiasm is the most powerful stimulant on this planet. What precedes enthusiasm is the CHOICE to be enthusiastic. The less enthusiastic we are, the less energy we generate. The more enthusiastic we are, the more energy we generate. And this is all possible through manual stimulation of the body.
Have you ever heard of the James-Lange Theory of Emotion? No? Well, I’m going to show you how to use this theory to generate enthusiasm at will.
The James-Lange theory states:
“… that emotions have a physical basis in the body.”
“When we see something emotional, changes occur in the body — and these changes make up our emotional experience.”
Have you ever been to a motivational speakers seminar?
The speakers have a way of activating emotional experiences within you. All they have to do is exhibit the emotion they want to elicit then you’ll surely follow suit.
An even better example of contagious energy is the “Haka.” The Haka is a ceremonial dance in Māori culture. It consists of vigorous movements, stomps, intense expressions and shouting that comes from the depths of the spirit and is straight up awe inspiring. I get goosebumps every time I watch one.
This is all made possible by mirror neurons which are neurons that facilitate the reproduction of behavior.
In order to “hack” this, you need to find something that you can watch, listen to or experience that will stimulate enthusiasm within yourself or you can even physically behave as if you were enthusiastic and the feeling will surely follow. Whatever works for you. But you have to remember one thing, big enthusiasm means big energy.
Be Obsessed Or Don’t Bother
When I lock in, I don’t stop until I achieve a goal in mind. Why bother doing anything if you’re not going to be obnoxiously obsessed? You want to flip flop then expect high earnings and notoriety? Don’t make me laugh.
“Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.” — Franz Kafka
Be obsessed or don’t bother. But you need you be obsessed with something that stokes your spirit. You have to have a thing.
Here’s how you know you’re obsessed:
- You jump out of bed at the thought of working on your thing.
- You get the crazy eyes when you think of your thing.
I don’t trust people who don’t get the crazy eyes when they talk about their work. If you don’t get the crazy eyes, you’re not obsessed. You’re lukewarm, in which case you should stop and find something else.
I love when someone talks about something they’re passionate about. They get this crazy, 1000 yard stare. It’s like they’re staring right through me. That’s how I know they’re obsessed. These are the people I trust with giving me advice. Obsession with the process, with the craft yields untold amounts of gems.
You can get the crazy eyes too. What do you love? If you don’t know, go somewhere quiet. Get silent and meditate. Then be honest about what comes up during meditation.
By meditation I don’t necessarily mean to sit in a cross legged pose. Find a corner in a quiet room and just think for 15 minutes. It will come to you.
Energy is all around us in abundance. All you need to do is figure out how to gather and harness it. One way that many high energy people do this is through caffeine. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that gets us going. Once you have caffeine in your system, you move past the mind and into the ether where all of the creative ideas reside.
You can also harness energy through sexual transmutation. When I first heard about sexual transmutation, it was when I read Napoleon Hill’s Think & Grow Rich.
We all have sexual energy. The key is how we choose to utilize it. Many people just squander it away. They have sex all the time, watch porn, masturbate giving up all of that precious, powerful, creative energy. Think about this, sexual energy is so powerful that it has the ability to create human life.
What do you think will happen if you harness that same energy and direct it towards your goals?
This is probably why athletes like Mike Tyson didn’t have sex before fights.
I’m not a puritan by any means. This doesn’t mean never have sex or rub one out. This means you take that energy and use it wisely. Focused energy is the difference between the high energy achiever and the low energy simp. Focused energy is the difference between a successful business and a failing one.
Think of energy as currency. You want to start a business, what do you need? Money, right? You invest that currency into your business. But what if you don’t have currency? No currency, no business.
If you don’t have this currency because you spent it elsewhere, you won’t be able to start this business.
Save that energetic currency so that you can channel it into the things you want to achieve.
Focus Only On The Things That Matter
In order to maintain high energy and focus, you must prioritize properly. You have to focus most of your energy on the top 20% of tasks while leaving the rest for later or other people. Follow the 80/20 principle which states that 80% of your outcomes are derived from 20% of the efforts.
Many people get this backward. They try to manipulate 80% of the outcomes rather than focussing on the 20% causes.
For example, every time I talk to someone who wants to start up a personal brand, the first thing they focus on is the website, email lists, social media followers and how to make money. When I tell them to forget all of that and focus on the things that’s going to yield them the brunt of the outcome such as content, they ask: “What kind of camera should I get? Should I buy a laptop? What kind of mic do I need for my podcast?”
You focus on the most mundane things and wonder why your energy is so low. Focus on the most important things. The things you know you should prioritize and let everything else fall by the wayside. When you focus on the top 20% tasks, you’ll have energy for days, months, years, indefinitely.
Recruit someone to do the other 80% of tasks, such as the admin stuff. The website, emails, phone calls, the type of laptop you should use, etc should be handled by people who enjoy all the technical details.
Wake Up And Affirm Who You Are
You have greatness buried within you. You have to affirm this before you get the day started so as to get the drop on yourself.
It all starts when you get up in the morning but first you must WAKE UP. First thing you do in the morning is get up out of the bed. Do not touch your phone. Get up, plant your feet firmly on the floor and affirm who you are. Notice I didn’t say who you want to be, but who you are.
You have to get to yourself first.
Affirmations are important for programming who you want to be. They must be said in the present tense in order for your subconscious mind to process them correctly.
For example, you want to be the best writer alive? Fine, affirm: “I am the best writer alive.” You want to be the best entrepreneur alive? Affirm: “I bring the most value in the world.”
Affirm who you are, use that momentum and carry it with you throughout your day.
The underlying key here is to align yourself with who you’re meant to be. This is where your energy comes from, alignment.
It’s similar to getting plugged into an outlet. When you plug your charger into an outlet, your device receives energy. When you don’t plug it into an outlet and instead into something like…a potato, you get no energy. Simple as that.
“Training gives us an outlet for suppressed energies created by stress and thus tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger
Studies show that exercise helps prevent and treat depression and anxiety. Physicality is important in order to be a high energy achiever. Your body is your temple. It’s the aperture through which you experience life.
It’s the filter through which you perceive and it determines how successful you’ll be. Try being optimistic when you’re out of shape. It’s nearly impossible.
Can you be successful and unhealthy? Yes but why would you want that? That’s a risky game to play. It’s not sustainable.
Whether you’re running outside or lifting weights in the gym, you have access to huge stores of energy that comes from the blood flowing throughout your veins. The blood is the life force of the body.
Sedentary individuals have a hard time accessing the true potential of their being because they sit for too long and their energy stagnates. Energy must move or we become sub-clinically depressed.
Only Take Breaks When You’ve Earned It
“Don’t let the grass grow under your feet.”
The job is never done. Follow through with your projects. The zeal you’ll experience when finishing a huge project is inexplicable. Most people take breaks that they didn’t earn.
If you want to achieve anything worthwhile in this life, you have to keep going no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you hit snags and set backs or if you achieve accolades on the way to your goals. Keep moving, the job is never done.
When you get caught up in the little set backs or the big accomplishments, you let that dictate your flow. Your flow should be 100% dictated by your will.
Don’t let the weeds take the garden. Don’t fall off. Don’t allow yourself to get lazy. Don’t let the grass grow under your feet. These are all adages that illustrate the fact that if you slack off, it’s difficult to get back on.
Falling off is directly correlated to taking breaks that you haven’t earned. You get complacent then think everything is all good, next thing you know you’re getting rusty at your craft.
This is especially true as you get older. You have a finite amount of energy and when you let days go by without accessing the energy you have available to you in the moment, you’ll find that you’ll have less and less of it. You’ll forget how to “go.”
One of the biggest illusions you have about this human experience is that you’ll feel the same at 18 as you do when you’re much older except that, objectively, you won’t actually have the same amount of energy you did at 18. It’s all an illusion.
Don’t stop. You didn’t earn a break. Keep going.
Avoid Low Energy People
“Law 10: Avoid The Unhappy & Unlucky
You can die from someone else’s misery — emotional states are as infectious as diseases. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortune on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.” — Robert Greene, The 48 Laws Of Power
The first time I read this quote, I thought that Robert Greene was a cold hearted person. I thought “Why wouldn’t you try to help the unhappy and unlucky? Why avoid them?”
I was just a kid then but as I got older I saw it’s wisdom and utility. I tend to slide toward the introverted side of the spectrum. But as I worked on breaking out of the behaviors that came with being introverted and started to mingle with people more, I was drawn more to those who have positive, upbeat energy. I was inspired and motivated.
On the flip side, whenever I got around the occasional Debbie Downer or Negative Ned, I felt drained and discouraged. My energy levels were sapped after being around those types.
Understand that it is detrimental to your energetic being to associate with people who are constantly unhappy. You can easily identify them. They usually complain about everything under the sun. The world is always out to get them and no matter what solution you try to find, they present a problem for it.
Have you ever heard of osmosis? No.
Well let’s look at the definition from the New Oxford American Dictionary to get a full understanding:
“Biology & Chemistry: a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semi-permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on both side of the membrane.“ — New Oxford American Dictionary
This accurately describes human social dynamics. If you want to elevate your energy levels, raise your vibration and thrive overall, you must avoid people who are low energy and toxic.
Their energy will act as the solvent that makes it across the semi-permeable membrane of your conscious mind into your subconscious mind and poison your spirit. If you ever been around doomers you’ll know what I’m talking about. It’s a zero sum game.
Get Hungry And Stay Hungry
“There is no substitute for hard work. Always be humble and hungry.” — Dwayne Johnson
I like to work and train while I’m fasted because I’m able to tap into the energy that physical hunger provides.
No matter how successful I get. No matter how much resources I amass, I make it an effort to remember the physical sensation of HUNGER. It’s what perpetuates the hunger mentality. It keeps the hunter alive in you.
Before I set my day in motion, I practice the 3 C’s:
Coffee provides the necessary stimulant to gain mental momentum, cardio allows for me to work up a huge physical appetite then I contemplate on what I’d like to achieve.Afterwards, I get to work.
It may sound silly to you, but don’t knock it until you try it.
The main idea is to retain the sensation of the hunger, drive and passion you felt when you first started something you love. Many of us kill our drive by being overly satiated. When we achieve some semblance of success the hunger starts to atrophy.
I’ll use hip-hop/rap as an example. When a new artist comes out, they’re usually hungry. Gunning for the person who’s at the top of the charts. They release mixtape after mixtape loaded with hot bars, tenacious lyrics over gutter beats.
What happens after they achieve success after one album? They fall victim to the “sophomore curse.” This is when they release the next album and it’s apparent they haven’t lived up to their previous masterpiece. They’ve hit their shelf-life. The struggle is over. The hunger is gone.
But if you find some creative process to retain and harness the raw energy that comes with being at the bottom, you’ll amass substantial, sustained energy and focus for your whole career.
Always Set New Goals
Think of life as a role-playing game where you level up incrementally as you defeat bosses at each stage of the game, except, you can surpass level 99. Always set goals. Be on the look out for new challenges that will provide more experience points for you as you careen through your journey of life.
When you achieve one goal, good. What’s next? Keep going.
“The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.” — Jim Rohn
It’s one of the reasons I love lifting weights. The barbell has a lot to teach you about becoming your most actualized self. You don’t lift purely for sculting your physique. You use the barbell to sculpt your spirit as well.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it just is. It’s your responsibility to access this energy and direct it intelligently to bring your creative ideals into fruition.
